Young Ambassador Of The 21st Century – Final

What a resounding success the Multiple District Final held in Dudley on the 20-21st February weekend was, yet again. Multiple District Officer Jane Armitage staged a marvellous weekend for the twelve District finalists, and sadly it‟s Jane‟s Final year in office for the Young Ambassador. I am sure we all wish her well and every success for the Europa Forum Final held in Bologna Italy .

But I am sure that the competition will continue to the high standard that we have come to expect with our new Multiple District Officer Graham Venables, good luck to Graham.

Chris Whitwood 105C candidate and sponsored by Selby Lions Club did a superb job and was supported by our District Governor Janet and several Lions from our district, we as a district should be very proud of him. Well done Chris, I am sure Chris has gained from his experience in this Lions competition and I know he has made 11 new friends. I heard somewhere after the gala dinner after an evening of superb entertainment provided by our 12 Candidates. It was said that they didn‟t go to bed until 3.30am I am sure that can‟t be right?? But I know they all had a wonderful time over the entire weekend.
How the judges choose a winner is beyond me, but they did, the title of Young Ambassador of the 21st Century going to a very worthy winner, Shane O‟Brien from 105I and sponsored by Roscommon Lions Club of Ireland , “what an amazing Young man”. He was well supported by the Lions and Leos of Roscommon also his very proud parents, Shane will be attending the Multiple District Convention at Leeds, [they will probably have to hire a 747 to bring his supporters] and any Lion attending will see why Shane won the title.

The Shipshape award went to an amazing young lady Kayleigh Jones sponsored by the Lions of Wrexham Maelor Lions Club, the award is for a candidate who will benefit from leadership – well done Kayleigh.

Once again I would like to thank DG Janet and all the Lions who supported Chris at Dudley and I know how much he appreciated, us being there for him.

It‟s never too early for clubs to be looking for potential candidates for 2010/2011, the forms and information are on the lions Website – don‟t hesitate to contact me for any information or help you may require.

Young Ambassador Competition

There were 5 candidates competing this year in the District 105C Young Ambassador Final, and once again it was amazing listening to each one of them the amount of service they give to their communities.
The judges had great difficulty in deciding who should be the winner as initially two of the competitors scored equal points. After more deliberations the judges then declared Christopher Whitwood (sponsored by Selby Lions Club) the winner. (Full report in next newsletter).

Lions European Music Competition

Owing to the weather conditions on Sunday January 10th 2010 the District Final for the competition had to be postponed at short notice until Sunday January 24th 2010.

We had 5 competitors this year for the Classical  Guitar.

All the performances were of excellent quality and presented a difficult task for the judges to select a winner.

I am delighted to say the winner of this years competition was Matthew Wilkinson, sponsored by Huddersfield Lions Club.

Matthew will perform at the District Convention in Harrogate on Saturday February 13th 2010.

He will compete in the Multiple District Final in Birmingham on Sunday April 18th 2010.

The successful candidate from this competition will represent Multiple District 105 at the Europa Forum to be held November 4th-6th  2010 in Bologna, Italy.

Next years chosen instrument is the saxophone .

2008/9 - Harrogate triumph in Five Nations Youth Football Final

Watching the gameIn this very prestigious Youth Football competition Harrogate ran out winners from teams competing from all over Britain. In a very close hard fought final played at Harrowby Lane,Grantham, Harrogate represented by Pannal Ash U14's just had the better of a fairly even first half hitting the cross bar towards the end. Their opponents Fairlop represented by Redbridge Utd Boys showed why they had conceded only one goal on the way to the final, the goalkeeper was very commanding.

Football

There are over 900 Lions Clubs throughout the UK. Through their youth programmes each is dedicated to providing challenges and opportunities for youngsters that they would not otherwise enjoy.

Any U14 boys team playing in its local league, and of course affiliated to it's County FA, can represent it's local Lions Club in this knock-out competition. Initial games are drawn on a regional basis so as to reduce travelling time and costs, moving farther afield as the rounds progress. The semi-finals and Final have in the past been played at the City ground, Nottingham Forest, Wallsall, Ispwich Town, Port Vale, telford United and Burton Albionl. And we are looking to have some personalities present at these games for the lads to meet, and to present trophies, etc. The Competition is sanctioned this year by the English FA and by UEFA.

District Peace Poster Final

I would like to thank all clubs who entered a candidate in this year's competition and extend congratulations to the winning contestant who was Jonathan Hill who was sponsored by Harrogate Lions. Thanks also to all Lions who supported the final and provided transport for the contestants who came to the final.

I was disappointed that only seven clubs in the District entered and would hope that next year more clubs can be encouraged to try and find youth organisations or schools who would be willing to enter next year. If any clubs want further information about the Peace Poster contest please do not hesitate get in touch with me.

Youth Exchange

Youth Exchange Inwards and Outwards

I had a conversation with our Multiple District Officer for Youth and he said that he would like to improve the number of Clubs in Multiple District 105 who sponsor a young person to take part in the Youth Exchange Outwards Scheme.

Every year he receives many requests from countries around the world and he would like to be able to fill all these vacancies.

This year he only had eight clubs from Multiple District 105 who sponsored a young person, thus enabling them to visit a new country and in doing so sample their culture and customs.

Fellow Lions, perhaps this year you and your family would be able to share your Christmas or New Year with a Young Person from Australia? If your answer is Yes please contact me on 01482 897518. Last year 105C did not host anyone over the Christmas period, so let’s see what we can do this year.
