Five Nations 2009-10

We commenced the season with 3 teams from our District- Selby, Tickhill and Withernsea. The first game was Selby v Withernsea on Sun 6 Dec. In a closely fought match Selby ran out winners 2-1. The next round, the District Final between Selby and Tickhill should have followed shortly but the weather intervened. With the worst winter for years, it gave us immense problems later on.

District Peace Poster Final

I would like to thank all clubs who entered a candidate in this year's competition and extend congratulations to the winning contestant who was Jonathan Hill who was sponsored by Harrogate Lions. Thanks also to all Lions who supported the final and provided transport for the contestants who came to the final.

I was disappointed that only seven clubs in the District entered and would hope that next year more clubs can be encouraged to try and find youth organisations or schools who would be willing to enter next year. If any clubs want further information about the Peace Poster contest please do not hesitate get in touch with me.

Youth Exchange

Youth Exchange Inwards and Outwards

I had a conversation with our Multiple District Officer for Youth and he said that he would like to improve the number of Clubs in Multiple District 105 who sponsor a young person to take part in the Youth Exchange Outwards Scheme.

Every year he receives many requests from countries around the world and he would like to be able to fill all these vacancies.

This year he only had eight clubs from Multiple District 105 who sponsored a young person, thus enabling them to visit a new country and in doing so sample their culture and customs.

Fellow Lions, perhaps this year you and your family would be able to share your Christmas or New Year with a Young Person from Australia? If your answer is Yes please contact me on 01482 897518. Last year 105C did not host anyone over the Christmas period, so let’s see what we can do this year.

5 a side football competition

The District 5 a side tournament took place on Sunday 6 June at Thorpe Willoughby Sports Association. This year it was played on grass instead of astroturf which made it better and safer to play on. After a very hot week it decided to rain on the Sunday but this was probably a blessing for the players. The rain did not deter from it being an exciting and enjoyable day. With a food stall selling endless bacon sarnies and beefburgers, everyone was kept happy. Teams sponsored by the Lions clubs of:- Garforth, Holderness, Minster York, Rotherham, Selby and Withersea took part with some putting in two teams.

Young Ambassador Competition

There were 5 candidates competing this year in the District 105C Young Ambassador Final, and once again it was amazing listening to each one of them the amount of service they give to their communities.
The judges had great difficulty in deciding who should be the winner as initially two of the competitors scored equal points. After more deliberations the judges then declared Christopher Whitwood (sponsored by Selby Lions Club) the winner. (Full report in next newsletter).

Football

There are over 900 Lions Clubs throughout the UK. Through their youth programmes each is dedicated to providing challenges and opportunities for youngsters that they would not otherwise enjoy.

Any U14 boys team playing in its local league, and of course affiliated to it's County FA, can represent it's local Lions Club in this knock-out competition. Initial games are drawn on a regional basis so as to reduce travelling time and costs, moving farther afield as the rounds progress. The semi-finals and Final have in the past been played at the City ground, Nottingham Forest, Wallsall, Ispwich Town, Port Vale, telford United and Burton Albionl. And we are looking to have some personalities present at these games for the lads to meet, and to present trophies, etc. The Competition is sanctioned this year by the English FA and by UEFA.
