Kassam newsletter

A Happy New Year to all fellow Lions in District 1O5C.

Our wishes also go out to our friends in Kassam, Ghana who have had to face considerable adversity since the last newsletter. It is only now becoming possible to contemplate resuming our works at the Kassam Methodist Junior High School.

This first newsletter of the year is necessarily short but happily confirms the good work done to date. The last newsletter was issued at the end of the 2010-11 Lionistic year and summed up an excellent years work on our District Project. Work on site necessarily gave way to the regular harvest and rainy season as expected.

However, the subsequent crop planting was then spoiled by worse rainstorms and even flash floods Only now are we able to contemplate returning to site as the people there have had to make good the damage and disruption to their community, their own property, crops and livestock.

lmmediately on receiving the news by Email from the pastor, Hornsea District Lions Club stepped in with a magnificent donation of £1,000 for new seed and livestock to prevent the situation driving the people of Kassam further into poverty.

Moreover Hornsea District Lions Club have set a budget of £500 for the contlnuation of the Twinning  arrangement and exchange of work between. Aldborough Primary School and the school at Kassam. To support this work, second hand digital cameras have also been given to both schools.

So what of our project? As anticipated the septic tank and ground works have survived intact. The septic tank needs cleaning out but there is no damage to the structure.

The villagers are making arrangements to get the pump-out tanker to the site to clear the water and sludge out, not only a wise precaution against Malaria but also showing that our planning for this toilet block works.

Given adequate water, vegetation in this part of the world grows very rapidly and our site is steadily being invaded. by plants. As soon as the school is reopened, the Pastor is to arrange a. working party to clear this new growth away and prepare the site for the next phase of work. This will be to build the toilet block itself.

As the Pastor can begin to give attention to this project once again, planning can also be resumed for the replacement classroom block. so desperately needed, especially after these dreadful events that have beset this small rural community.

All this is being achieved because the Lions of 1O5C care!

fellow Lions, please bring this District 105C appeal to your clubs for discussion at the next meeting and donate whatever you feel yoou can.

Help us to keep the momentum of this very successful project rolling along.

Thank you.

Please make cheques payable to Lions Clubs International (105C)on the reverse write "Kassam Appeal" then post it to our District Treasurer, George Berry
