Lions/Tacade Life Skills Programme

"LIFE CHANGES" for 3-11 year olds.

New Resource available for £29.95

Everyone will experience change and loss throughout their lives, such as family breakdown or the death of a relative or friend. School communities have to support children who have faced loss in one of its myriad forms. So this resource adopts both a proactive and a reactive approach to loss and change and will enable staff to make an immediate considered response to a loss and change situation, including bereavement.

It is a practical working document with ‗tried and tested practical ideas, including ideas for activities, linked to curriculum areas, and assemblies; poems, letters, writing and artwork; a teach staff, governor, resource list.

In addition there is a wealth of background information for teaching staff about aspects of loss, change and bereavement.

Areas covered include:

Childrens questions about death and dying

Telling sad things

Divorce

Children anticipating the death of someone close

The dying child

The impact of disability

Talking about a parent/carer who is dying

Talking about a grandparent who is dying

Dying siblings

Sudden death

The dying teacher

Suicide of a family member

Refugee and asylum seekers

Living with a family member with mental health problems

Children of imprisoned parents/carers

Young Carers

Participating in funerals and rituals

Meeting individual secular and religious needs

Childrens developmental understanding of loss, change and bereavement

The resource was initially trialed Hull.

Primary schools fed back the following comments:

―It has raised a greater awareness about the length of time it takes for a child to grieve…

―The resource has given staff confidence and lots of useful ideas and approaches…

―It really helped us when a pupil was losing a loved one

Supplies of A4 pamphlets regarding this resource can be obtained direct from TACADE on 0161 836 6850

Fellow Lions, would you please consider sponsoring at least one copy of ―LIFE CHANGES‖ for a Primary School in your service area in 2010 - the cost just £29.95.

Specialist pages

These pages deal with various health issues which are tackled locally, nationally and internationally by Lions members.

Fundraising is only one aspect of tackling a problem. Lions International is organised not only to fundraise from those who are willing and able but to ensure that any aid is distributed fairly, efficently and to those most in need.

In many parts of the world, health issues contribute to the poverty of the people who live there and poverty prevents them from escaping those ills.

National Memorial Arboretum Appeal

WE CAN HELP!

Please, right now, if you are reading this article, take 5 seconds - just 5 seconds, to remember someone you knew who has died….

Now, how do you feel having given a few seconds of your life, remembering theirs?

Located in the heart of the country within the National Forest near Lichfield, the National Memorial Arboretum comprises 150 acres of over 50,000 trees and over 150 memorials devoted to the concept of Remembrance and acknowledging the enduring sacrifice of those who mourn their loss.

Life Changes

At long last our latest resource "Life Changes" was published week commencing 12th July 2010.

My special thanks to Wetherby District Lions Club who have ordered 6 copies and to Featherstone Lions Club with a whopping order of 11 copies.

I am aware the demand from Lions Clubs and Schools in MD105 is significant and we are, I feel, on the brink of yet another Lions/Tacade success story.

MIAB Can & Does Save Lives

I would just like to let all Lions know how useful and vital Message in a Bottle is.

I recently found my mother collapsed in the bathroom, phoned for an ambulance who kept me talking until the paramedic arrived, then the questions started whilst I was in panic mode and scratching my head trying to remember, "who’s your GP, what medication is she on, what’s her date of birth...."

But, Hey Presto, all the vital information needed is there waiting in the fridge.

The paramedic told me that they wished everyone kept a MIAB in their fridge to make their life simpler thus being able to treat the patient quicker and effectively. The paramedics even took the MIAB to the emergency department where they are able to cross reference the information.

Our MIAB is a vital tool which assists the NHS to treat people correctly and efficiently. Keep on taking it to your events, and be proud that you could be saving someone’s life......

Talking Newspapers

Lions have a proud history of involvement with Talking Newspapers for the blind. A great many of the 600 TNs that currently exist across the Multiple District do so because Lion Members were involved in their being established. But that was all around 30 years ago. That said, there are still about a dozen of theTalking Newspapers that are still run by or bear the name of the Lions Clubs that founded them.

We applaud them all.

During the past 18 years The Lion Magazine has been made available, albeit spasmodically, in the same format as a Talking Newspaper, but that will change with immediate effect.

The Lion is now digital........Each blind and visually impaired Lion that we know of in the Multiple District is to be provided with a new boom box which will play thumbdrives rather than tapes.

The downsides to this move are zero. The positives are that quality is considerably improved and a full magazine can be included on one stick. In addition, we will be able to include everything that can be found on both the Multiple District and Lions International web pages.

Every District Sight Officer will receive a boombox for demonstration purposes. I invite every Lion President who has any club members who would benefit from receiving the Lion Magazine (or District papers, The Governor’s newsletters and such) in this way, whether they be visually impaired or cannot read for any other reason, to call Lion John May of Lichfield Lions on 07948794982 and a boombox will be provided.

Yours in Lionism

Lion John May

Vulnerable People and CRB Checks

Following the election of the new Government they have made a decision to relook at the ISA legislation which was to have been put into place in July.

This means that registration with the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) is now on hold until further notice.

We will continue to do CRB checks on all Lions who undertake any activities with children or vulnerable people as we have always done, and I will ensure that any changes that affect individual Lions or Lions Clubs will be conveyed to you as soon as possible.

There is now a new CRB form which we will need to use, and from 20th July 2010 CRB will not accept any of the old forms. If there are any of these old forms lurking about anywhere in the District they will need to be destroyed either by shredding or burning.

Please contact me by telephone or e-mail if you have any concerns or problems.

Lion Margaret Riley
District 105C Vulnerable Persons Officer
