Specialist pages

These pages deal with various health issues which are tackled locally, nationally and internationally by Lions members.

Fundraising is only one aspect of tackling a problem. Lions International is organised not only to fundraise from those who are willing and able but to ensure that any aid is distributed fairly, efficently and to those most in need.

In many parts of the world, health issues contribute to the poverty of the people who live there and poverty prevents them from escaping those ills.

Signature Projects

LEHP LogoThe Signature Projects are about to be launched.   Are you ready?

Do you want to increase your membership?

The Signature Projects are part of a key membership drive!

Past International Director Phil Nathan explains –

"Our Signature on Our Community" Signature projects are not a new idea but they can easily be a legacy. Back in 2002 then International President K K Fukushima encouraged clubs to put a "stamp" on their community by doing something that everyone would recognise as a Lions "stamp". In MD105 we have so many varying "stamps"; it may be a Lions emblem made from flower bulbs planted in the local park or something as amazing as a hospice. No matter how big or small, many of our clubs have left their signature on their community.

Thanks to all those 10 Clubs who have so far made a donation to the Lions Sight Savers Trust during this Lionistic year. I won‟t list them, you know who you are – a great big thank you.

Apart from major disasters in the world which 105C generously support, & of course LCIF, there can‟t be a better cause than the Lions Sight Savers Trust.

LIONS SPONSOR THE MAJORITY OF EYE CAMPS AROUND THE WORLD.

Perhaps, after Christmas fundraising, your Club might consider making a contribution.

A Happy New Year to everyone.

Music and the Deaf

Music for the Deaf logo

As many of you who have attended District Conventions are aware there is a charity based in Huddersfield called Music and the Deaf. This project is run by Lion Paul Whitaker and has now become a National Charity.

Lions have supported this project for a number of years and three Lions are now on the Board of  Directors of this charity.

Lion Paul is looking for some volunteers to help out with administration duties at their office in Huddersfield. This could be for a few hours a week either as a one off or on a regular basis. Any support you can give will be much appreciated.

If you are able to help out then please contact me by e-mail on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with details of what help you can provide and I will pass them onto Lion Paul.

Planting a Million Trees

Planting a Million Trees?

Many of you will have seen details on LCI website of International President Tam’s campaign to plant 1 million Trees worldwide. Some of you may even be asking - Why Trees?

It’s no secret that trees help the environment, but you may be surprised at all the benefits that planting a tree can provide. Trees are the lungs of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. They reduce erosion to save soil, help preserve local water sources, and provide habitat for wildlife. Simply by planting trees in your neighbourhood really is the best thing you can do for the environment.

Lions Eye Health Programme

Well done to Leeds Skyrack & Holderness Lions Clubs, who, in addition to Bridlington Lions, held a "Sight Activity‟ during Lions Awareness Week & World Sight Day. If your Club has an activity planned, then please advise me so that I may report it.
Thanks also to those five Clubs who have so far made donations to Lions Sight Savers. As at 18th November, our District has donated £1,210 out of an MD total of £10,040.
Due to the economical situation it is understandable that donations are down, but the work must go on. The Lions Sight Savers Trust needs you, so please help.
New leaflets & posters are available covering the major causes of preventable blindness, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy Cataracts, etc. Supplies can be obtained through me or by ordering on-line. Let‟s get involved & reach out to our communities.

Be prepared. Get Ready

The "Signature Project‟ will soon be launched across the whole of our Multiple District. Back in 2002 the International President KK Fukushima encouraged Clubs to put a „stamp‟ on their Community. After all this time, we are now going to do it, so that everyone in the land will recognise us as Lions. Our „stamp‟, or stamps, will be the "Lions Eye Health Programme‟ & "Young Leaders in Service‟. Both messages utilised enthusiastically will deliver

“Our Signature on our Community”

By the time you read this article I will have attended a meeting of the "Signature Project‟ in Birmingham & will report again in January‟s issue.

LCIF

The MJF programme was established by LCIF in 1971 to recognize unrestricted donations of $1,000. Today, more than 75% of the funding received annually by the foundation is given through the MJF programme. By expanding the recognition programme LCIF is able to recognize more individuals while continuing to support its many programmes.

Below are details regarding the expansion of the MJF programme, to include donations made to five special programme areas. Donor will now be able to receive MJF credit when directing their support to the following:

1. Disaster
2. Humanitarian Needs (including donations to the measles initiative)
3. Sight
4. Youth
5. Areas of Greatest Need

Restrictions beyond these five special areas will be honoured by LCIF, but will not be eligible for MJF credit, e.g. Donations to a specific disaster, such as an earthquake or tornado in a particular region will not be eligible for MJF.

a) This will enable LCIF to be able to provide funds for large scale disaster relief immediately rather than collecting and distributing funds over a period of weeks or months.

b) Donors will now have the opportunity to direct support to a desired special area.
Funding directed to area of greatest need, provides LCIF with the ability to financially support programmes within these general areas. Donors are encouraged to consider this opportunity when making a gift.

Cheques made out to special areas should have the area and for future MJF on the reverse.

Kassam newsletter

A Happy New Year to all fellow Lions in District 1O5C.

Our wishes also go out to our friends in Kassam, Ghana who have had to face considerable adversity since the last newsletter. It is only now becoming possible to contemplate resuming our works at the Kassam Methodist Junior High School.

This first newsletter of the year is necessarily short but happily confirms the good work done to date. The last newsletter was issued at the end of the 2010-11 Lionistic year and summed up an excellent years work on our District Project. Work on site necessarily gave way to the regular harvest and rainy season as expected.
