Health & Safety and CompetitionsHealth and Safety Dear Lion President, Fellow Lions, Lionesses & Leos Welcome to another New Year in Lionism Thank you to all those of you who have sent me copies of their ―Risk Assessments‖ they have carried out for all their club activities involving the general public. Please keep sending them in to me. You may not all be aware, but we are required to have an Health & Safety Officer appointed in each individual club. If your Lions Club has already got an Health & Safety Officer, good, if not please appoint one as soon as possible in order that you do not fall foul of any regulations should anything unfortunate happen at one of your activities. I would be grateful if Clubs would let me have the names of their appointed officer ,and also if you would send me a copy of your risk assessment for each activity you carry out involving the general public. Please keep copies on file for reference and future updating. It is difficult to produce a ―generic‖ form for all occasions, but please do not hesitate to phone me if you require any information. Not complying with the above could affect your insurance cover in the event of a claim against the club. Competitions These will evolve over the next couple of months, but in the meantime please send your Travelling Lion Forms to me ( Lion Roy Field ) on or just before the 20th of the month so that I may inform the Newsletter Editor of the up to date points position for inclusion in the District Governor‘s Newsletter. Finally a request, is any Lion or Lioness still in possession of a copy of the ―Rules and Information‖ I circulated re-garding all competitions in October 2000? (Or within a year or two of that year). Sadly, I gave away one copy too many, and I would appreciate on for reference please If you would like me to come along either to an individual Club or a Zone meeting to talk about Health & Safety or Competitions please give me a call. Who knows I might even ask to come along and visit — you have been warned. Unfortunately I am not on e-mail, but I can be contacted either by writing to me or telephoning, my details are: Tel: 0113 253 5710 Lion Roy Field |

Road to SafetyThe Road to Safety manual can be downloaded from the British and Irsih Lions website. CongratulationsLions Clubs International have more than 1.3 million members worldwide and aims to assist communities both locally and globally. But even while helping others in need it is apparent that many lionhearts are captured along the way. Lioness Sylvia Marshall (Pontefract Lioness Club) and 2nd VDG Lion Ken Wild (Normanton & District Lions Club) announced their engagement at the International Convention in Sydney. insert picture 2nd VDG Lion Ken & Lioness Sylvia Lion Ken said that he saw a beautiful ring whilst they were window shopping, and as we were in Sydney I thought what better time to get engaged. His blushing bride-to-be said the two hoped to get married at the Lions International Convention in South Korea in 2012. (as published in the Australian newspapers) Lion Ken and Lioness Sylvia wish to thank all of their Fellow Lions and Lionesses for the cards and Best Wishes that they have received since they became engaged. Operation FriendshipWhat a super Lions programme this is, for those of you who may not have heard of it, let me give you a little insight into it. Malcolm and I saw the advert in The Lion and decided to send in an application to take part, once we had been accepted all we had to do was book flights to Australia and make our way to District 201.V6 N.S.W. We were met by 3 Lions from the District and their wives and within 15minutes of meeting them we felt we had known them a lifetime. We were hosted by the Lions for two weeks and during this time we attended two Club meetings and their District Convention, (it was here that I had to do a little presentation - it seemed to go down well). We were most impressed with the Convention, it was held in a large community hall, not in big expensive hotels, no all singing, dancing, state of the art gizmos - just all very down to earth and at a most reasonable cost (tea and coffee all day AT NO CHARGE). At the end of Convention we were taken to Melbourne by the parents of one of our former Youth Exchange Students. We hosted Tanya in 2002 - and it was great to catch up with her and see how well she is getting along, it was also good to meet her parents. All the Lions we met were extremely friendly and we feel that we have made many new friends. At the end of the two weeks we took off on our own and managed to get to meet up with another two more Exchange students, this time it was 18 years since we hosted them - we were invited to stay with them for a couple of nights and this gave us chance to catch up with what they had been doing during the intervening years. Tammy lives in Canberra and Angela lives just north of Sydney. None of this would have been possible had we not had the opportunity taking part in Operation Friendship. Adverts will be appearing very soon in The Lion, I am sure, maybe next year could be your turn. PDG’s Lions Eileen & Malcolm Smith |
