Convention 2008

2nd to 4th FEBRUARY 2008

C went to sea again

District 105-C Convention took on a slightly different format with Lions and partners meeting at The Village Hotel, Hull on the Friday evening for an informal evening and to be there for the prompt start on the Saturday morning. Over 190 Lions and partners attended this, the 43rd Annual Convention of whom over 150 Lions attended the business session whilst partners looked round Hull.

District Governor Bryan and District Officer Margaret Riley, International Director Dave Stoufer and Lioness Rachel Stoufer and the Lord Mayor of the City of Kingston-upon-Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Brenda Patch, were escorted into the hall, where the usual distinguished “Ceremony of the Flags” was carried out by Cadets from The Hull Trinity House School. Other guests included PID Phil Nathan, Council Chairman Jeff Byers and Lion Anita, PCC Lion Philip and Jacquie Goodier. The Invocation was read by Zone Chairman Susan Daker and the “In Memoriam” conducted by PDG Peter Jay. The Lions Code of Ethics was read by Zone Chairman Ian Sagarl and the Lions Objects read by Zone Chairman Peter Cooper.

District Governor Bryan Riley had changed the format, and instead of reports being given verbally more time was allocated to discussions and debates and this appeared to be successful. All Zone Chairmen and District Officers were asked to give any updates and this was all over in less than five minutes.

Lion Cyril Goodridge (Rotherham) was confirmed as District Governor Elect for 2008- 2009. There was a contest for Vice District Governor 2008-2009 with Lion Janet Weatherill (Holderness) being elected. The Open Forum took place for 45 minutes and was very interesting and worthwhile. The first item after lunch was another new idea in the form of entertainment when Lion President Stephen Bellerby (Ilkley Moor) gave a very entertaining show of Magic. Vice District Governor-Elect Cyril Goodridge addressed Convention followed by the winner of the Young Ambassador District Competition, Emma New (sponsored by Denby Dale & District Lions Club) who amazed everyone present by the number of things she was doing for the benefit of many people and organisations as well as studying for seven A Levels. She certainly deserved the award which was then presented to her by International Director Lion Dave Stoufer and District Governor Bryan. They also presented the District 105-C Peace Poster Competition Award to Rachel Glover (sponsored by Harrogate Lions Club). Two Keynote Speakers were Lion Martin Buckiewicz of TACADE and “Bereavement in Schools Project” by District Officer Margaret Riley. International Director Lion Dave (Santa Claus) Stoufer gave an interesting and entertaining talk revolving around Santa Claus.

Then, for most of those attending it was on to Holland…

After the business session Lions and wives and partners proceeded to King George Dock, Hull to embark on “The Pride Of Rotterdam” ferry..

The Saturday Host Night fancy dress theme provided plenty of scope in interpretation judging by many of the creations on view at the reception held in the Sky Lounge. Dinner was in the half of the restaurant reserved for our exclusive use on both nights.

Next morning after breakfast (and a delay due to passport control flexing their muscles) we travelled to Zaanse Schans, an industrial, residential museum complex. The weather was fine but chilly and after time spent viewing the area we continued the journey to Volendam arriving at the Hotel Spaander for lunch. Time was available for a walk by the Zuider Zee before boarding the coaches for the return to the ferry.
