District Governors Partners Appeal
This year my District Governors Partner's appeal is for the Spinal unit at Pinderfields Hospital
As some of you know, I work at Pinderfields, albeit within a different speciality and felt it would be nice to have a charity close to home.
The Spinal Unit accepts patients from a large part of the North of England, which includes the whole of our District.
The Spinal Unit Recreational Fund or S.U.R.F. is a new group formed by volunteers, whom at some time have been associated with the spinal unit in one way or another, either as a patient or a nurse. They receive no money from the Government or the hospital and rely on fundraising; this means a lot of fundraising.
S.U.R.F. has been formed to raise funds to provide Recreation, In house equipment and also Projects for patients who have suffered Spinal Cord Injury. The average cost for a day‟s outing is £800 and this type of programme is considered essential for the patients recovery and integration back to normal life.
Spinal cord Injury can happen to anyone of us who experiences a few moments of bad luck. It can be as simple as falling off a ladder or perhaps falling down the last step on a flight of stairs. You don‟t have to fall from a great height or do any dangerous sports to end up disabled and confined to a wheelchair. Patients can spend from two to twelve months in the Spinal Injuries Unit while they rebuild their lives.
I would be very grateful if you could arrange some fundraising activities with your clubs for this important Charity. You never know when you may need them for yourself or someone close to you.
