Tsunami Disaster

Fellow Lions

We start the New Year with a vision of hope as we respond to the needs of those who have suffered an appalling natural disaster. We launched our appeal so that we can give support to our fellow Lions who are working so hard to alleviate the suffering to so many. You have responded magnificently and we had £13,500 donated before the New Year.

We have set up a disaster co-ordinating team, consisting of myself, VDG George Morgan, District Secretary, Ian Thornhill, District Treasure Bryan Riley, PDG Gordon Lazenby and our International Officer Nigel Ware. We have been working very hard over the holiday period with valuable contacts being made in the disaster area. This has resulted in a common strategy, see attached file, that will enable us to maximise our efforts in one country. For more information see our web page http://www.lions105c.org.uk/asian_disaster.htm

Every day I receive phone calls from our members pledging money and asking how they can help. We have seen the massive support from the public but much more will be needed in the long term and already we have leant that low cost housing and repairs to the fishing boats are needed. These potential projects will be investigated on the ground and be given due consideration to ensure that our money is used wisely.

Ways to help:

  1. If your club is able to, or wishes to donate to either the district fund or to LCIF.
  2. Organise fundraising activities and I would encourage joint activities to maximise our efforts.
  3. The Red Cross are organising a collection. This will take place outside Tesco Stores Nationwide between 9am and 6pm on Saturday 8th January, and 10am and 4pm on Sunday 9th January. They are appealing for help with manpower. If any Lions Club is able to help this would be very much appreciated and they should contact their local branch of the Red Cross for more details.
  4. If you have any Lion contacts in Sri Lanka or have any contacts with carriers who will be willing to help please forward them to Nigel Ware.

Fellow Lions, over the last few days I have been moved to tears on many occasions with your responses and generosity and may I thank you all for your efforts to date and your continuing support in the future. Our fellow Lions on the front line are working so hard and your continued help will be inspiration to them.

With your help we will make 2005 a happier New Year for so many who are suffering. May I wish you and your members and their families a Happy New Year.
