105C Strategy for the Tsunami Disaster

Fellow Lions

I feel that it may be useful to update you all on our 105C strategy to date in response to the Asian Disaster.

  1. Appeal to Clubs to get them involved and to create working funds so that we are able to meet needs as identified by Lions in the affected areas for short to long term projects. Clubs have responded magnificently and pledged £12,500 by holding telephone voting ahead of Club meetings.

  2. Develop contacts in the areas via our existing network. This has resulted in us agreeing to focus 105C efforts in Sir Lanka. This will enable us to have a meaningful impact without diluting our efforts and will create good working relationships that will be to our mutual benefit.

  3. Asian Disaster Team set-up to co-ordinate a standardised approach and to ensure that short, intermediate and long term needs are met.

    a. Short term needs will be addressed by making smaller undesignated funds available to District Governors for their discretionary use. Small amount of medical items are being delivered this next week, more will follow if needed.

    b. Intermediate needs will be assessed in consultation with PDG Gordon Lazenby who has regular business contacts in the country. He has arranged meeting mid January with all the DG's and past PID in the country. Funding will be allocated based on their recommendation and approval/assessment by our team.

    c. Longer term support will be assessed and joint projects with LCIF and match funding by local clubs will be considered in the future.

  4. Research and web based contacts will be channelled through our International Officer Lion Nigel Ware.

  5. Reports from PDG Gordon Lazenby to be directed via DG George Bennett for dissemination as appropriate. There is need to minimise emails to Gordon whilst he is out of the country.

  6. DG George to update COG and ID Lion Howard Lee and PID on key activities.

  7. Will have joint projects with other Districts, if they so wish.

  8. Web page has been set-up to enable all clubs visibility of our progress. http://www.lions105c.org.uk/asian_disaster.htm

  9. Encouraging all clubs to donate funds through our organisation so that we can support our fellow Lions in the disaster area with short, intermediate and long term projects. Working in partnership with other organisations is also encouraged.

Our thoughts and prays are with those in need, the volunteers and rescuers who are working so hard in these difficult times. We hope that our small contribution will create a happier New Year for them all.

George Bennett
